The four basic functions of mulch:
- Beautification
- Preventention of excessive evaporation and erosion
- Enrichment of the soil
- Prevention of weed growth

Different mulches will do some things better than others. Cedar and Shredded Hardwood
Bark, for instance, are better at weed control and enrichment of the soil than the dyed
mulches, but they deteriorate more quickly. The dyed mulches on the other hand, offer
much in the way of beautification and tend to last longer. Another benefit to dyed mulches
are that they are made of recycled wood products, which is a plus for the environment.
Too much mulch is harmful!
Mulch should be spread no more than three to four inches thick. This will help with weed
growth and also help to maintain moisture in the soil. Make sure that you don't over-mulch.
Too much can suffocate small plants, and cause damage to trees.
